Fuel imports reached $1.6 bn in 2019

Imports of diesel oil, premium fuel and lubricants grew from $115 million in 2001 to $1.6 billion in 2019, affecting the trade balance, public finances and the fiscal deficit. Hydrocarbon subsidies increased from $74 million in 2006 to $794 million in 2019 with a tendency to continue rising until the end of the current administration.
