Women’s unemployment rate rises to 11%, and informality spreads

In January this year, the female unemployment rate was 11% and underemployment 16%, respectively, while the male unemployment rate was 9% and underemployment 10%, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE) report. The Covid-19 pandemic aggravated the employment situation of women and stalled the process of labour equality. Nearly 700,000 people were unemployed in 2020, most of them in the informal sector, especially women.
